Close to two years and 5mil XP and I'm still not bored with my mes (although PvE in general has lost its charm). Why?

1) Looks. <3 my Smarty! Also there are so many armours I like the look of, it cost me a small fortune and kept me motivated to play GW:EN beyond the point of no return in order to get the new stuff that I liked.

2) Fast casting. Highly addictive. Play a mes for a while, then switch to playing another caster, and feel the pain of those long-casting-time spells.

3) Playstyle. I'm a control freak so playing a mesmer suits me down to the ground.

If neither the looks nor the ability to quickly cast spells from the back lines really appeals to you, don't delete one of your existing 15k-armoured characters just yet. You can make use of many of the best useful-in-PvE mesmer skills on a curses necro, for instance, if you want to give the playstyle and skills a go.

Oh btw, I am a Pver ... and yeah I know, mesmer shines in pvp
It's for me the second most fun class to play (after my rit) you can do almost everything with a mesmer, from the heavy shutdown builds to the passive energy denial up to the aoe e-denial of e-surge (wich causes a decent armor ignoring dmg), else you could just be a fast cast nuker (I dislike this build). It's really fun to shutdown someone else, be it a real player or a mob.
Sometimes I do even use my mesmer to farm some bosses, and it's way faster than with a ss or sv necro, the only downside is in finding pugs, but who cares about them if you have a kinda competent friendlist. In a decent group a mesmer can be crucial.

Like said fast casting rules.
I play my mesmer because:
I hate and love my mesmer
I´hate stupid pugs who dont understand how mesmers rule
I hate that it cant farm nearly anything or join bigger farm groups
I'm an idiot
Best profession in game!!!!

BUT STILL MESMERS PWN echo ftw

I've played a monk... hated it.
I've played a rit... bored me.
I've played a war... bored me as well.
I've played a paragon... extremely boring.
I've played an ele... still fun sometimes, never really had a "wow" moment with it though.
I've played a ranger... never excited me.

But mesmer... Oh mesmer. I wish I had found you sooner.

Fast casting makes me happy.
Using spells from other classes to their full effectiveness makes me happy.
Having really awesome armor makes me happy.

I run a [Signet of Illusions] build. Usually as a FC Nuker. I don't bring a res and along with my aoe nukes, I bring [arcane echo] + [ebon vanguard assassin support]. I can't tell you how fun it is to drop my nukes then drop two level 20 assassin's into the fight. I can chain my nukes, then chain my assassins out before I run nearly out of energy.

I am always afraid to ping my build when I join a pug, because I know that everyone will go "omg, nub mesmer". But seriously, I do so much damage it's not even funny. And when I'm not doing heavy damage, I'm pressuring monks with my dual level 20 assassins and blinding all the martial classes with eruption.

Seriously, this is so fun.

There have been moments that have made me honestly laugh out loud. Some war beating up on me so I dual sin him and he goes down in a flash. You just get that feeling of "Yeah, try to pick on the mesmer again."

Not only that, but I've begun bringing Gwen along on most missions now as an artificer and it's great having her around. I use the artificer build + Life Barrier for the monks. Works great.

Anyone who's ever had a little fun playing an ele, should try a mesmer FC nuker. You'll never play ele again.

1) You get cool armour (15k Kurz female).

2) You get to say 'OMG LOOK AT ME I PLAY MEZMER ARNT I LEET?'

Beyond that, not much.

Good Reasons..
-Armor pwnz j00r face
-armor ignoring damage
-Interrupts
-Ineptitude
-cool casting animations
-Fast Casting (really addictive, tried ele later and didn't like because got too used with FC)

Of course, there are bad things in them too, but every class has some. I wouldn't have mesmer as main if I didn't like play it. And now to think, I feel like I just repeated most things said here already.

-Fast casting!
-Kickin' Armor
-Awesome casting animations
-Fast Casting
-PuGs don't want you (<3)
-Shutdown
-Mess with peoples heads ( go Me/N to mess with their dead. o,o)
-Fast casting!

Seriously, even just 9 points in Fast Casting rox socks. I'd rather play SS on my mesmer than on my nec just because of FC.

Reasons to play a mesmer:

-Fast Casting FTW
-Domination Magic FTW
-Illusion Magic FTW
-Inspiration Magic FTW

oh, and how about this: SIGNET OF ILLUSIONS + Arcane Larceny + Arcane Mimicry.

Mesmers, are really more suited for shutdown in a different form. Things such as Shame, Guilt, Diversion, and that occasional powerful interrupt skill. Power Leak, Cry of Frustration...but that's really the best non-elite ones go.
Power Drain is quite conditional, and I personally don't like it anyway.

But the power of prediction > Mesmers interrupts. 1/4 casts say g'day. ;o
lol last time i checked, mesmers have human players with brains behind the keyboards too. prediction is something the player does, not something a class comes with inherently. watching a monk stagger run, pause-turn, and gag kite are all the same dead give aways a good mesmer sees too.

i could easily say my warrior has the power to predict RoF or SBond when i shock the crap out of a monk, but thats from practice, and learning to watch your enemies....

also, mesmers have 3 unconditional interrupts, and like 15 spell based (not including sig of d, which goes both ways) interrupts, not to mention like 10 preemptive interrupts like clums, wandering, ect...

mesmers rule the world of interruption when you learn how to play one correctly, and while i agree the ranger has a crap load of utility in just one simple dhot (dont get me wrong, rangers take a very close second..), mesmers have a lot more to offer in their preemptive interrupts, disablers, and active interrupts.

for pvp...
*cough power leak* *cough shame* *cough diversion*
for pve...
im not even going to sugar coat it... CoF and Cry of Pain>pve NM and HM..

Hoo boy. Mesmers are nasty toons. I hate them with a passion in PvP lol but they are definitely fun to play. Me/N are amazing with the hexes and keeping a caster or even a tanker out of play for good.

I should make a mesmer sometime 0_o.

I'm a big Mesmer fan, but if you plan on playing PvE only with your mesmer, don't bother.
Imho the only good reason to start a PvE mesmer is to get a good looking PvP toon.

Now can we stop turning this into a Mesmer versus Ranger interruption discussion? We already have a thread for that.

And Diversion isn't an interrupt, it plays strongly on the mental side of your opponent forcing quick decisions their way, and if they get the conditional on a skill, it's quite painful, but it doesn't stop what the enemy is doing.
